Standard NIJ IIIA protects against:
- 9×19mm
- .357 SIG
- .44 Magnum
- most pistol ammunition
When you see IIIA+ , the manufacturer usually claims additional protection against:
- faster pistol ammunition;
- some ammunition for PP (9 mm from a long barrel);
- splinters and fragments;
- sometimes specific "special threat" cartridges.
Important:
- IIIA+ is not protection against standard assault rifle/rifle cartridges such as 5.56 NATO or 7.62×39 unless the manufacturer has explicitly tested and stated it. For such protection, Level III/IV hard plates (or the new RF1/RF2/RF3 standards) are used.
